In the face of violence and different vices in the Nigerian society, women have been called upon to promote peace of peace and development in Nigeria.
Addressing participants at the 2014 World Membership Day of the Young Women Christian Association (YWCA) in Lagos, women were called upon by a number of speakers to come out of their comfort zone and promote peace in Nigeria.
Sussie Metu, one of the speakers at the event, said “this is the time for us to come out and address issues threatening our peaceful co-existence’ we as women should not just sit and pretend that all is well because we are not affected by the crisis in different parts of the country. It is our responsibility as women and agents of change not just to preach peace and love but to also put it into practice through our deeds.”
Also speaking at the occasion with the topical theme of Bold and Transformative Leadership, Ayodele Akindeinde also enjoined participants not to be onlookers in the quest to build peace and unity in Nigeria.
“World YWCA Day brings us together to celebrate and reflect on our contribution to creating safe and secure communities for women. Each year, YWCA women move a little closer to a world where gender equality is the norm and where girls, young women and women are as valued and empowered as their male counterparts. We are a richly diverse movement representing women from all walks of life, all contexts, cultures, experiences and ages. We are women of the world that have a common purpose and this purpose brings us together into this special movement that we have created. It is the fact that we can work together for a common cause and define a common goal within our diversity that makes us bold and transformative and which sets us apart,” Akindeinde said while reminding women that they can only effect positive changes in their environment if they are bold and transformed leaders.
Since 1947, the YWCA has always brought members together every year on April 24 to affirm their involvement in global movement of women and girls working towards justice, peace, health, human dignity, freedom and care for the environment.
