foodEggs are a good choice as part of a healthy, balanced diet. The most common egg used today is the hen’s egg, though duck, goose and other fowl are available in some areas.

Egg yolks are high in cholesterol (215 mg for a large egg, and the American Heart Association recommends only 300mg/day); an egg white (albumin) is fat free and contains only 10 calories. Nonetheless, so here are some useful reasons eating more eggs is a fantastic way to give oneself a health boost.

Eating whole eggs is vital: the goodness of eggs is found in the yolk (containing over 90 percent of an egg’s calcium and iron) and the white (containing almost half the egg’s protein). If you’re not eating eggs regularly, here are five reasons why you should.

High-quality protein

Eggs are high-quality protein and contain all eight essential amino acids. Two eggs contain 28 per cent of an adult woman’s daily protein needs, which is great for active women trying to tone up or slim down.

Essential vitamins and minerals

Eggs contain most of the essential vitamins and minerals for health, especially vitamin A, B2 and D. Vitamin D, together with calcium, is essential for healthy teeth and bones. Eggs also contain choline for a healthy brain, folate for pregnant women, iron, selenium and iodine

Eggs are no threat to blood cholesterol levels

All major UK heart and health organisations now recommend egg consumption. It is now known that the dietary cholesterol in eggs does not have a significant effect on blood cholesterol. Our bodies actually need cholesterol to build cell membranes, digest fats and make hormones. It’s the bad saturated fats and the trans fats that do such devastating damage to the heart, not the healthy fat in eggs.

Easy to prepare

Promotes weight loss

A medium egg contains fewer calories than a large banana! Studies now show that people feel fuller for longer after eating eggs. You will lose weight quicker if you eat eggs for breakfast instead of carbohydrate-rich muffins, bagels, doughnuts, bread or cereal.

Healthy egg tips

•If possible, and affordable, always choose free-range, or preferably organic free-range eggs.

•Store eggs safely – in the fridge.

•Avoid the spread of bacteria from eggs to other foods, utensils or work surfaces.

•Cook eggs well. Ensure that both white and yolk are solid. This will kill bacteria such as salmonella and is the safest option if you are concerned about food poisoning.
