As a monarch, he had recently been celebrated in a week-long activities in commemoration of a decade of ascending the throne of his forefathers; and then last Saturday an unprecedented crowd thronged his palace as Ogun State Government (OGSG) through its Ministry of Justice conferred on Oba Akoroede Akamo, the Olu of Itori land, a respectable title of Justice of Peace (JP) in appreciation of his roles in ensuring peace and tranquility within and outside his domain.

So, his associates, well-wishers and subjects rolled out the drums in celebrating their monarch for these multiple honours.

At a special reception organised for Oba Akamo for the feat, people took out time to eulogies him as a courageous man who always stand for the truth in all his dealings.

“Everybody knows that Kabiyesi (Oba Akamo) is a lover of peace. I personally will commend him for resolving knotty issues through dialogue; so I am not surprised that this is coming to him. It is a great honour and I think we all are happy, hence we celebrate this great monarch who in a short while has transformed our land through his deeds,” Moruf Adeoye, one of the indigenes of Itori, said.

“Without peace we all know that no society will develop. I continually pray and hope for peace within and outside my domain, and this is probably what spurred OGSG to confer on me the great honour.

“I have a clear understanding of what the society demands of me as a Justice of Peace as it is enshrined in the rules and regulations. It wasn’t planned; I am just honoured and as you know that it is a call for me to continuously and constantly promote peace. So, I won’t relent in doing that through the grace of God,” Akamo said while speaking with journalists after being conferred with the title.

Oba Akamo alongside his chiefs and other kingmakers in his domain also used the occasion to confer on Abiola Afariogun and his wife, ‘Borokini of Itori land’, one of the highest titles in Itiro.

Afariogun who expressed utmost joy at the honour promised to help bring some developmental projects into the town whenever the opportunity arises.

Individuals appointed Justices of the Peace have a clear understanding of the law in view of the important roles they play in the dispensation of justice and peaceful co-existence in the society. The title of Justice of the Peace is conferred on deserving individuals in recognition of the significant roles they play in the administration of justice in the society.

It was established primarily to handle a large mass of minor cases which would otherwise have unduly congested the higher courts and thereby result in the very slow dispensation of justice.

The primary duty of the JPs is to maintain law and order as well as reduce corruption and nepotism; they are expected to be fair and just in their dealings with those who appear before them and not use their positions to amass wealth or oppress the poor.
