The Oshadipe twins have been on the scene for over two decades. They started as child musical starlets and now, they have delved into acting. They revealed to Senior Correspondent, Hazeez Balogun, the pranks they played when they were kids and their move from music to acting
You acted in Super Story, how was the transition from music to acting?
Well, it’s not that we have not done some acting before, but Super Story was a big leap for us. We thought that Super Story would take us into acting full time. Then we decided to go for it. We went for the audition. There were many twins there. I told our manager that I did not believe in the whole thing. We thought they already knew who they wanted.
We were surprised one week later when they called us up. We looked at the script and found that the story was all about us. That was how we entered mainstream acting.
Since you do more acting than singing these days, do we now call you actors or musicians?
Sure, we are actors now. We got good reviews in our previous works and we are getting good review from Super Story now. That shows that we are good in acting and we will be doing more of that in the meantime. In Nigeria of today, anything that brings food to your table is what you invest in. It’s just that we will be careful with the way we go about it. We make sure we take roles that project the kind of persons we are. You know that in Nigeria, when you do some certain roles, people easily believe that is the kind of person you are.
When you started as children, people saw you as cute and charming when you sang but now you are grown up, do you think people still see that appeal in you?
It is still there. People were attracted to us when we were still very young, and we still have those fans. Thank God, we do not have any scandal or involved in any controversy. I believe that we are still seen as those children. Also, many of our young fans then are now married and have kids, and they know we have good messages in our songs, so they will surely pass our music down to their children. The fact that we are identical twins also attracts people.
You performed with Michael Bolton when he came to Nigeria, it must have been a magical moment for you?
He is one of our favourite artistes, so performing on the same stage with him was a privilege to us, although at the end of the day, we couldn’t have time out with him because there were so many people and he had a tight schedule. But really, it was an unforgettable time for us.
Is it true that Segun Odegbami discovered you?
That is very true. He met us at one of the churches we went to perform. One of his friends who knew us in the church took us to him. He immediately took to us. He introduced us to people and all that. Till today, we are still very close. He is like a father to us. We call him Big Shegs. We tell him every move we plan to make.
You know he has a daughter that sings, why not do some work with her?
The thing is that May Seven (Odegbami’s daughter) is based in London. She comes once in a while but not long enough for us to even plan to work together. And that is one of Big Shegs headache. He thinks May Seven should come back and do music in Nigeria.
You are really identical, have you had any moments when people mistook you for each other?
Ah, a lot of times. When we were in secondary school, we used to play a lot of pranks with our teachers. There was a time one of us was punished and was told to kneel down and raise up her hand. She was wearing a cardigan. Any time the teacher left the class, I would wear the cardigan and take her place. We kept on swapping places and one of the girls punished along with us reported us to the principal. We kept pointing at each other as the culprit. We were eventually left alone.
There was another day that my twin’s boyfriend came visiting. I went to open the door for him, and before I could say anything, he started kissing me. I was shocked. When he eventually found out, he was perplexed.
Many people still view you as those young girls. Is it safe to ask about marriage?
People really do not know how old we are. We won’t say it, but we are not young anymore.
You can’t be more than 26
We are older than that.
Ok, what are your plans for marriage?
We don’t live our lives in a hurry. We keep doing our thing, what belongs to us will definitely come. I believe that marriage is a matter of time. When a woman gets to the point of marriage, she will find the right man that will make her special.
Twins’ marriages are usually complicated especially when one gets married before the other. Do you think you will have the same experience?
Such things usually happen to us. Because we are close knitted, we usually overcome it. Sometimes, when my sister breaks up with her boyfriend, is when my boyfriend and I will have problems. It comes unconsciously. It is my boyfriend that will say; “Oh, because your sister broke up with her boyfriend, you are trying to break up with me too.” We pray that we won’t have such experiences when we get married.
The issue of marriage is vital to us because of what we do, and what we have been doing since childhood. When husbands come now, they will be saying this is what you can do and what you cannot do. We pray to God that we will find men that will appreciate us for who we are, and know that we cannot dump what we have worked for all our lives. We are not saying that we will not appreciate our family or be there for them, but we want to have a balance. So, help us God.
How can one differentiate Taiwo from Kehinde?
To us, we are not alike. Many people have their ways of differentiating us. So we leave it to our fans to pick which way they want to.
