The comic genre as a platform of bringing educative and informative story lines to the reading public, especially young readers got a boost recently when some enterprising King’s College Old Boys – Tunji Anjorin, Sunkanmi Akingboye, Rotimi Dawodu, Adeniyi Adeniji and Rotimi Dawodu – unveiled the ‘Okiojo’s Chronicles’ at a public presentation held at King’s College Annex, Victoria Island during which 560 copies of the comic books were donated to JSS 1 students of King’s College
The Okiojo’s Chronicles (okiojo in its literary translation stands for wisdom; an all knowing man) is a comic series designed as a platform to entertain and educate the reading public, especially students to learn some values and virtues from heroes past who distinguished themselves in their lifetimes.
In his opening remarks, the Principal, Otunba Oladele Olapeju said efforts of the old boys in the production of the comic series and the donation is a mile stone in many respects.
Apart from ploughing back from where they had taken from, he said the old boys involved in the creative projects have also come on stream with a comic series that will help project role models who distinguished themselves as worthy ambassadors and leaders of their people.
“Oduduwa and Queen Amina are well known personages in history who played heroic roles that cut across their respective communities and influenced the history of their eras. It is important that younger generation of children must know about them; the roles they played in our history which will help the children to appreciate the fact that people have been here and achieved something monumental for the society in their era.”
General Secretary of the association, Lucky Idike, said the old students behind the comic book series have helped in creating employment.
“The comic books given out as free are a product of research into Nigerian history. It is a time consuming creative efforts and diligent scripting that finally translates into comic books; the brand we are holding in our hands this afternoon.”
The Okiojo Chronicles is coming on stream from the stable of Panaramic Entertainment founded in 2007 by Tunji Anjorin and Teme Banigo with three series – Oduduwa-The Story Of The Yoruba; 1897 (is specifically designed to tell the story of the Benin Kingdom); there is also Queen Amina parts 1 and 2. The production of the comic book was sponsored by Etisalat.
