Founding president of the Association of Tourism Practitioners of Nigeria (ATPN) and foremost hotelier, Alabo Mike Amachree, has described late Urhobo leader, General Patrick Aziza as a leading light for tourism in Nigeria.
Speaking at a meeting with select Tourism Practitioners recently, Amachree said the best way of situating the contributions of Aziza, who held sway at Ministry of Commerce, under which tourism affairs were placed during the military era, would be to immortalise him.
Amachree recalled the help Aziza offered Tourism Practitioners at the time as he encouraged them through visits and offered financial assistance at various instances.
“Aziza was a light to tourism in those dark days and he ensured that tourism enjoyed attention, Amachree noted, adding: “the late General visited Port Harcourt tourism beach and gave us financial support as he did to others who were on ground.”
Appealing to tourism practitioners never to forget tourism administrators who supported the sector, the foremost tourism expert said they should not only be honoured when they die.
“Aziza was one the best as they come and his intervention and support for tourism should guide Federal Government and those in tourism today on how to run tourism affairs in Nigeria. Aziza was a role model and most be hornoured,” Amachree concluded.
