Ekiti-based singer, Tope Ademoye is an inspirational singer who believes in the potency of music to bring about positive change in the society. Senior Reporter Anthonia Soyingbe had a chat with this talented singer and he opened up on his foray into the industry and on other issues.

Different artistes have different stories on how they started, for you can you tell us how you started?

It started when I was barely 10 years old. Back then and till date I do enjoy listening to comedy and songs of Late Gbenga Adeboye.  I still admire his style and his originality. Back then, I never thought of becoming a musician but with time the passion increased with a very strong burning desire to always sing.

At what point in your life did you decide music was the perfect choice for you?

Fortunately or unfortunately, I started shortly after Prince Adeboye passed on in 2003. My friends and siblings then encouraged me to release an album as they all concluded that I have great singing talent. To the glory of God, God himself connected me with some divine helpers who helped lunched my career tremendously. I am eternally grateful for their continuous supports. I released my first album Talent Explosion in 2008 and it became an instant hit which lunched me into limelight. The acceptance of that album is still a motivating factor for me today because I know I will go very far in music.

What inspires the lyrics to your music?

All good and perfect gifts are from God so God inspires me and happenings around from time to time inspire me. I compose my songs when I am alone.

Tell us about your childhood days, how was growing up like for you?

I was born in Osun State and my parent imbibed into me very good values which are still my guiding light. I attended public schools, though we weren’t rich, I had a memorable time growing up.

Some people describe music as tool for change, what particular song have you composed to enhance change in Nigeria?

I am an advocate of societal change and to a very large extent I am a moralist. I released an album some time ago titled Efficacy; I preached attitudinal change in the album. I believe a better Nigeria is the responsibility of not just political leaders but the sole responsibility of all Nigerians. I also promote Yoruba culture through my songs because some of us don’t cherish our culture and tradition; this however is not a good omen for us as Africans. Music to me is a tool and I am using it well to bring positive change.

Who are your favourite icons in the music industry?

Late Prince Gbenga Adeboye still remains a great icon I respect. I look up to many people in the industry like Adedotun Ajala of Moyinnet Limited; he is one man who encourages talented budding artistes.

Do you think you can endure what it takes to be a musician in Nigeria?

I can only do all things through Jesus Christ who strengthens me and I am very sure that with persistence and perseverance, I will make it big in this industry. My fulfilment comes not from fame or wealth but in affecting lives positively. With my music, I can bring the desired change to Nigeria. Some people believe I can’t make it big here in Ekiti but I tell them that I will be a force to reckon with in the industry. It is not about being in Lagos or anywhere but about the quality of your songs. I know I have all it takes to get it right in this industry.
