NGO initiates peace movement

An Abuja-based non-governmental organisation, Women for Peace in Nigeria (WOPIN) last weekend concluded a 21-day fasting and prayers for peace and tranquility in the country ahead of the 2015 general election. WOPIN founder Dr.  Maryam Abdullahi while calling on women to be harbingers of peace at the event announced the commencement of a peace movement through a group called, Knock Knock for Peace Initiative.

According to Abdullahi who commended Nigeria’s First lady Patience Jonathan for some of her strides in promoting peace in Nigeria, the newly formed group  through its ambassadors across the 774 Local Governments in Nigeria will move from house to house to preach the message of peaceful co-existence, harmony justice and love.

She said for the success of project, WOPIN would mobilise its members across the country into action to reaching out to millions of homes to educate them on the necessity of having peace. “ Our scope is nationwide and we will go to the remotest nooks and crannies of this nation to preach the gospel of peace. Our members would visit villages, hamlets and local environment. In addition, we will empower women and youths through different skills so that we help in lessening the scourge of poverty that often pushes may into crimes and violence,” she said while addressing journalists.

Abdulllahi further called on individuals, governments at all levels and organisation to key into these noble projects with the aim of building a culture of peace in Nigeria.
