Year 2014 has indeed been very great and it would remarkably go down in history as one that actually redefined Nigeria’s entertainment’s space. There were lots of beautiful, good and ugly occurrences some of which actually left outstanding effects in the industry.
The following were some of the flashes of events that happened as well as personalities that featured prominently in the outgoing year:
Davido
2014 was the year of Davido, 22year old HKN Gang lead artist. Davido at a young age became the first winner of BET international act award. The singer also got nominated for other enviable awards such as the Soul Train awards and MTV Europe awards. He equally dropped several hit tracks in 2014 which many believed increased his beef with his arch-rival artiste ‘Wizkid.’
In all, this talented and gifted artist won 25 awards in 2014 alone and just a few days ago, he was appointed as a brand ambassador in a multi-million Naira deal by manufacturers of popular toothpaste.
M.I
After four years of hiatus, M.I Abaga fondly called Mr Incredible released his anticipated album. The album titled Mr Chairman as the arguably best Nigerian rapper delivered an impressive album.
Desmond Elliot
Desmond Elliot made an impressive political outing in the outgoing year. The popular Nollywood actor won the ticket to contest the Surulere Constituency 1 seat to the Lagos State House of Assembly under the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Unfortunately, his other notable colleagues like Kenny Saint Brown (KSB), Kate Henshaw, Abolore Akande, Dayo Adeneye, Bob Manuel-Udokwu and Tony Tetula who also tried to secure tickets to contest for seats at various constituencies did not have mother lick shine on them. They all lost in their attempts at their Party Primaries.
Keffe
Petite gospel and inspirational singer Irikefe Obareke Don-Momoh popularly known as Kefee died on June 13, days after falling into coma while travelling by air. Her death shook the industry.
She had embarked on a 14-hour flight to Chicago, United States for an event when she went into coma, forcing the plane to land in Los Angeles, so that she could be urgently attended to. Kefee whose music career started at age eight in her Church as a Chorister, was famous for her gospel songs ‘Branama’ and ‘Kokoroko’.
Taiwo Oshadipe
The music industry witnessed yet another untimely death when the life of one of the Oshadipe twins, Taiwo, was cut short while recuperating from an undisclosed ailment. The mother of one died in October leaving behind her sister Kehinde, her son, mother and other siblings.
Amaka Igwe
Though she is not a regular face on screen, her unique and creative works speak volume of her prowess. The veteran producer of rested Soap opera Checkmate, Violated, Fuji House of Commotion, Rattlesnake and many other brilliant works Amaka Igwe, was announced dead on April 28 in Enugu.
The news threw many of her fans into mourning. A visionary and pioneer of modern Nigerian TV drama and film, she hit national limelight as the writer and producer of award-winning TV soap ‘Checkmate’ and its off shoot ‘Fuji House of Commotion.
The founder of BoBTV Expo, founder and CEO of Top Radio 90.9FM, Amaka Igwe Studios, and the newly-launched Q Entertainment Networks was reputed for her brilliant professional concept. She is one of the very few film practitioners who genuinely love the industry. She was always at the forefront promoting the industry and yearning for positive changes in the industry. The producer of popular television show, Fuji House of Commotion, had gone to Enugu with her husband for a pre-production preparation for a new soap when she suffered an asthmatic attack and was immediately rushed to a hospital. Unfortunately she died before help could reach her.
Flavour, others:
Okoli, aka Flavour N’abania, and his girlfriend, Sandra Okagbue, were blessed with a baby girl on September 27 2014, in Houston, United States of America. The Ada Ada crooner and Sandra, a former Delta Soap Queen who once dated Super Eagles midfielder, Mikel Obi, are said to be over the moon with the arrival of the tiny pair of feet and have taken to the social media to tell all their friends of the coming of the bab.
Popular singer and photographer, TY Bello, after nine years of childless marriage welcomed a set of twins just few days after the she released her second album. Also Mercy Johnson gave birth to her second child in Baltimore on October 15. Comedienne and TV host Helen Paul who got married in 2010 welcomed her second child on November, 24. Popular hiplife musician, Martins Okey Justice, popularly known as J-Martins and his pretty wife, Nnezi Diana Mbila, welcomed their first child, a baby boy in the United States of America also in the year.
Uche Ogbodo
Just seven months after America-based ex-footballer Apo Arthur paid her bride-price, Uche Ogbodo announced to the world that she is done with the union over what she called ‘irreconcilable difference. However, Ogbodo said that her recent relationship was dissolved because it was based on lies and deceit while adding that she wasn’t really married as the union she argued wasn’t solemnizied.
Ini Edo
Ini Edo few months back also announced on social media that she has ended her marriage with her husband Philip Ehiagwina whom she got married to in November 2008. Ehiagwina we gathered demanded for the bride price he paid to marry the actress and it was given to him.
