For nine years running, many confectioners and cake lovers have always looked forward to exotic cake exhibitions by Kogsy Cakes and SugarCraft and have attested to having never been disappointed.
Organiser of the event, Kehinde Gbelee, speaking during the ninth edition of the Kogsy Cakes and SugarCrafts international cake exhibition and training in Lagos recently, said her aim is to ensure that cakes designed by Africans continue to be brought to limelight even in 2015 and beyond.
On the occasion, which witnessed many visitors and cake lovers, several cake bakers and designers creatively displayed their individual uniqueness and innovations in the industry.
Participants came from across Africa to learn and showcase the new techniques of cake making and decoration.
There were several ecstatic and unimaginable cake decorations and designs on displayed.
Speaking on the designs that were displayed, Gbelee said that over time, the outfit has come to the realisation that rather than showcase western designs (though not a bad idea), it was proper to concentrate on designs that are African rooted and targeted towards African bakers.
“I thought of Africa as a continent when coming up with this year’s programme. I want to show the creativity of cake designers in Africa and that’s the reason we see our designs as fashion on cake catalogues.
“One of the uniqueness of this year’s exhibition is the theme of the event because we are showing that we are really a creative people and the cakes on the catalogue are the first of their kinds in Nigeria,” said Gbelee.
Speaking further on her plans for the cake industry, she said: “I can promise you that we will continue to innovate, try new designs, but our ambition is to showcase the cakes we can do in Africa.”
One of the participants, Bidemi Aderemi, lauded the initiative of Kogsy Cakes, saying that it was a great eye opener for her catering career.
“The Kogsy Cake and SugarCraft exhibition is one event every cake baker and designer must never miss. New innovations, techniques and strategies are revealed. Likewise, bakers from neighbouring African countries always come around to learn. A lady was even here from London to learn the special way we do our designs in Africa.
“Because in Nigeria especially, we put in a lot of artworks into our designs which endears our clients to us and even make international colleagues want to learn the special skills from Nigerians. So it is an awesome event,” said Aderemi.
The occasion witnessed some side attractions such as raffle draws and sales of baking items. Guests at the exhibition also went home with gifts.
