Music scholars who benefited from the MUSON Scholars programme, under the aegis of MUSON Alumni, began the Valentine celebrations with a concert, at the Agip Recital Hall, Onike, Lagos last weekend. The impressive performance ushered in the valentine season, setting the tone for this year’s festivities.

In her congratulatory message to the group for putting up a show comparable to any concert outside the country, Director of the MUSON School of Music, Mrs. Marion Akpata, praised the performers for maintaining the high standard of the school. She said the ultimate goal of the music school was to bring back good music to the society.

“We are proud of our students who have come of age. They have become self-sufficient, improved on what we taught them and exceeded our expectations. We hope that someday, some of them will return to become executives of the MUSON School of Music. We are also grateful to the MTN Foundation for partnering with us to make this possible.

Executive Secretary of the MTN Foundation, Ms Nonny Ugboma, praised the quality of the performance. She said such display was a testament to the faith the Foundation has in the talents of the students.

The partnership with MUSON started in 2007 to assist brilliant but indigent students fulfil their dreams of pursuing a career in music. As part of the partnership, the Foundation took full responsibility of sponsoring 220 students in the music school. In addition to tuition, they covered book allowance and transportation stipend to facilitate movement of the students throughout the duration of the programme.

“We believe in adding value and impacting the lives of people living in our communities on a sustainable basis”, said MTN’s Corporate Services Executive, Akinwale Goodluck. He said that through their corporate social investment arm, they are investing in people and communities across Nigeria because it is by so doing that the wellbeing of the society can be sustained into the future.”

From inception to date, the Foundation has sponsored over 200 students who have gone on to become masters in their chosen careers. The Foundation has expended over $10b dollars in the last decade on over 34 project sites in Nigeria.
