As part of its many activities in preaching the gospel of peace to Nigerians ahead of the general elections, Women for Peace in Nigeria (WOPIN) led by its National president Dr Maryam Abdullahi, recently organised a ‘Peace Walk” in Abuja.
The walk an initiative of WOPIN through its Knock Knock for Peace program according to Abdullahi is not just for preaching peace during the elections, “it is a program meant to promulgate peace to Nigerians at all times. The truth of the matter is that an atmosphere devoid of peaceful co-existence is not good for anyone and so we deemed it fit to preach peace to Nigerians as we have done in the past. I am very sure this will work and we all will all be prosperous in a peaceful Nigeria.”
Abdullahi who stated in her message that women and children constitute major victims of all forms of crises world-wide disclosed that her organisation is fully prepared to partner with any responsible organization to secure peace for the sake of our Women, Children and other vulnerable in the society.
“While we commend many kind-spirited persons and organisation efforts in totality for holding the peace of the country in check for years, WOPIN would like to call on media organisations across the country to initiate programmes that would avoid hate advert presentations and speeches. The media as the 4th estate of the realm should be in the forefront for the propagation of peace and should not be used as fora for entrenching hate speech and violence.
“It should remain as a vanguard for peace in its daily reportorial. The use of juveniles for any form of ethnic, political, religious and even communal crises in the country should also be renounced by programmes formulated by media to instil lasting peace. Nigeria as peace loving nation of people with diverse ethnicity, culture and religion, will continue to remain so for peace, and any individuals or group bent on fomenting crises for the nation in whatever way, under any guise, would be consumed by the wrath of God as witnessed in the past,” she opined while adding that WOPIN will take the Walk to other zones of the country.
Participants however expressed optimism that Nigerians through the walk and other activities of the group will embrace peace.
