To help integrate people living with disability into the society and give them a sense of belonging, the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs, LASODA, recently organised a two day sign language training workshop for its senior staff.
At the workshop, the participants were educated in the area of non-verbal communication- facial expressions, gestures, eye contact, posture, tone of voice and using knowledge of same to build better relations among people living with disability as well as carrying out assignments effectively.
Speaking during the programme, LASODA’s general manager, Dr. Babatunde Awelenje said: “The purpose of the programme was to integrate people living with disability into our society so as to give them sense of belonging and make them relevant in our world. The special people’s law has been signed in order to reduce discrimination, Jingles to sensitize and enlighten the public in all electronic media is on.”
He therefore urged Nigerians to embrace people living with hearing impairment and other disabilities, particularly pleading with employers not to sideline this group of people in gainful employment.
