Ask any other mother if she had any strange cravings during her pregnancy and she might tell you she ate nothing but chicken sandwiches for a week, or become obsessed with olives.
One Bristol mother-to-be’s cravings are a little more unusual.
According to the 26-year-old, she one day had an impulse to lick a bar of Dove soap – which she did.
Now nearly eight months’ pregnant, Ms. Gayford regularly snacks on bars of soap and liquid sanitiser.
‘It came out of nowhere. I wanted to lick a bar of Dove soap,’ she told the Bristol Post.
‘I went to buy a bar and started licking it. It sounds disgusting but it’s really nice.’
Jess’s partner Lee Trimby, with whom she has five-year-old son Alfie, said he was (understandably) worried at first, but has since been told it won’t harm their unborn child.
Hormonal changes and nutrient deficiencies are thought to behind unusual pregnancy cravings, though pica – which causes people to eat non-food items such as sand or paint – is still rare.
