Vice Chancellor, University of Lagos (UNILAG), Professor Rahamon Bello has been conferred with the Award and Certificate of Credence as National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Outstanding Vice Chancellor of the year.
NANS Vice President, Comrade Tosin Ogunkuade, said the largest body of the student movement in Africa, comprising of all Universities, Polytechnics, Monotechnics, and College of Technologies in Nigeria deemed it worthy to bestow the award on the VC for outstanding leadership style.
He commended Professor Bello for resuscitation of the students’ union at the university, contending that what led to the suspension of the union’s activities in 2005 were mere misunderstanding between the management and the students’ body.
At a short reception, the Dean, Student Affairs Division, Professor Tunde Babawale, expressed appreciation to the union and commended the transformation that had taken place within its fold recently.
He stated that the award, deemed fit and willingly conferred on the VC, would no doubt further encourage him to do better for Nigerian students in general.
The VC in his response the leadership of NANS under Comrade Tijani Usman, for bestowing such an adorable honour on him while in office, contending that a bigger appreciation should go to the immediate Past Dean, Student Affairs Division, Professor Olukayode Amund, who initiated the processes; Professor Solomon Akinboye, who headed the Constitution Drafting Committee, University of Lagos Students Union and not forgetting the students for making the process work.
He appealed to the union to sustain peace on university campuses and promised to engage dialogue at all times on matters relating to students’ welfare and safety.
