The Nigerian music scene is littered with up and coming artistes among which is the group, Skuki, made up of brothers Atewologun and Tumininu Laolu-Ogunniyi.
In a chat with Klieg Light, they spoke on the logic behind the title of their songs and what makes them unique. Skuki said that their names are more of sounds than words, adding that inspiration for the title of their songs comes from what makes them happy.
Ask Skuki what their opinion is on some people’s impression that their individual name makes little or no sense. And they are quick to say, “It is natural to expect such.” Furthermore Skuki revealed that you cannot compare music from different artistes and hope to get the same result, insisting that some people write songs to make their fans think when they are sober, while others do tunes that will make you forget about the stress of everyday life. Skuki said their kind of music is what you listen to when you don’t want to think of the day-to-day stress of life.
“Everybody cannot do music that will make you think, but that is not to say that if you buy our album you won’t find one or two songs like that. But if you want to dance and feel good in the club, we give it to you good.”
On their genre, Skuki said it is difficult to classify their style of music because of the numerous kinds of melodies they listened to while growing up. Skuki opined that having listened to music genres such as fuji, rock, pop and juju inspiration comes from different angles.
They further made reference to how people abroad are amazed by the kind of music and beats done in Nigeria, while Nigerians are not surprised about anything coming out of here, concluding that it is different strokes for different folks. The brothers however stated that Nigerian hip-hop would be an ideal description of the kind of music they do.
On their future plans, they said that two of their singles, Don’t let your daddy know and Silifa are currently rocking the airwaves and they hope to release their debut album at the end of the first quarter of 2014. Apart from their music, they also hope to release Peeshaun Condom into the market.
Skuki also stated that the condom project is one which is kicking off in 2014 as a major investment. On what brought about the idea, they revealed that the it was motivated by their uncle, Professor Dapo Ladipo, who told them that the problem of over-population can only be tackled from the grass root and in the case of uncontrolled population, through family planning. Plans are also on the way for them to share a million condoms in 2014.
Though brothers, the duo have differences in their choice of women. One likes them slim, while the other prefers them chubby.
“The only problem we have is in the type of women we like. While one of us likes slim girls, the other loves chubby girl, but in terms of character everybody wants a good girl who will stay with you and will not just go around messing up,” one of them said,
On their relationship with the late Goldie, they said, “it was just a mere friendship misunderstood by a lot of people, while the romance with Nnena was a brother sister kind.”
With the kind of flashy lifestyle Skuki lives and insinuations that they might be into advance fee fraud one is forced to ask where they get their money from.
“There are a lot of ways you can make money, but people just think it is all from sales of music and endorsements. Those things make money also, but we have a big fan base in South Africa, Kenya and other African countries where we do shows and get paid. We also have businesses, which we are into. If you don’t do other businesses, you won’t be able to survive the day-to-day life,” they said,
The artiste also stated that they are ambassadors to Nairabet.com, which pays them well adding that because the Nigerian entertainment industry is just developing and artistes don’t make money from downloads, entertainers have to basically sustain via show, whereas internationally, a musician can survive based on the millions he makes from downloads alone, Skuki concluded.
