Experts canvass health education on maternal mortality

Notable Health experts have called for an intensive health education among Nigerians to reduce the tide of deaths of women in pregnancy as well as infants in the country.

They proffered the urgent development of the Primary Health Care level of delivery to encourage patronage while reducing the burden place on the General and teaching hospitals in the country.

In the various paper presentations to mark the annual 2014 Ordinary General Meeting of the Lagos State Medical Guild, the experts observed that the lack of development of the PHC has increased the burden of patients care on the other two tiers.

Speakers at the event included President, Resource Centre for Medical Law, Research and Development, Laolu Osanyin, who spoke on “Disciplinary Action Against Doctors (Ethics or Sentiments) as well as on Drug Presentation” calling for review of disciplinary actions on medical practitioners to conform with modern practice.

Others are Consultant Obstetrician, Dr. Yusuf Oshodi, who spoke on “Causes And Management of Postpartum Haemorrhage and Application of Anti-shock Garment,” urged doctors to become more conversant with the techniques which he described as one that has successful save lives of women who experience haemorrhage, “leading cause of death in pregnancy”.

In his presentation, “Patient, Referral: Treatment Option or Not” Professor Victor Inem,

advised against delays in the management and care of patients especially when there is doubt over the patient’s case.

In their respective submissions on the theme “The Roles of Doctors, Patients And Employers, In The Health Care Delivery Services”, all the Speakers reiterated the need for close co-operation with other stakeholders to create such a very meaningful, constructive positive road map, to firmly and promptly arrest the prevailing unfortunate scourge, ravaging the sector.

They advised that all Medical and Paramedical Staff should to be very cautious of the legal implications of actions that could lead to the patients’ untimely death while they are in their care.

They also urged government to pay premium attention to the Health Care Sector of the economy, by increasing the expected votes to measure with the present global demand to promptly arrest the unfortunate attendant increase in the mortality deficiency.

They however pleaded with the masses to ensure prompt attention and care to their health to ensure longevity.
