Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State, was agog last week, as about 650 local and foreign delegates arrived the Garden City for the 44th/9th biennial conference of Methodist Church Nigeria under the theme: “Let my people move forward.”
In a statement made available by the Church’s Media and Public Relations Officer, Rev. Oladapo Emmanuel Daramola, the conference, which began on Monday, August 4, was declared open by the state governor, Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi, on Tuesday, August 5.
Speaking on the conference, Daramola said while the gathering provided the opportunity for teaching, worship and an atmosphere to fellowship together, as well as approve new Church policies, there were also deliberations on current issues that affect church and society.
Matters bordering on HIV/AIDS, poverty in Africa, home grown terrorism, especially the activities of the Boko Haram sect vis-à-vis the non-release of the Chibok girls, secularism, unemployment, education, ecumenism, agriculture and science and technology, were among the pertinent issues discussed at the conference.
The Prelate, Methodist Church Nigeria, His Eminence, Dr. Samuel Chukwuemeka Kanu Uche, also ordained 161 Deacons and six Deaconesses of the Church at a magnificent ceremony lined up as part of activities put together for the conference.
