Nigeria has witnessed a boom in the number of reality television shows in recent years and the entertainment industry has been the better for it. While some shows have weathered the storm over the years, becoming mega brands and attracting worldwide corporate acceptance, others have disappeared without a trace.

One of the renowned shows is the Supermom reality TV show, an interactive platform from the stable of Digital Interactive Media Limited, aimed at celebrating African mothers of all socio-economic backgrounds for their unflinching love and care for their children.

The uniqueness of the format distinguishes it as one of the very few family shows on television. It has also endeared it to not only the viewing public but corporate organisations that see it as an opportunity to connect with their target market.

Since it began in 2010 Supermom has been anchored on the philosophy of true human interest values as evident in the emotional stories told by mothers never seen or heard on any broadcast platform across Africa.

The Supermom TV show, based on its antecedents, has transformed lives either directly or indirectly with all the people involved having fantastic stories to tell on its impact in their lives.

Nkechi Rapu and Folajoju Adesona, winners of the first two seasons of the show, have become homeowners, while new cars have been given to Muibat Adisa and Blessing Nwaohu, also participants in the show, as a prize for their unflinching love and extraordinary sacrifice for their children.

Famous people got to take part in the celebrity edition in 2012, giving more credence to the popularity of The Supermom and reinstating the fact even the elites have a story to tell and were not left out of the buzz the show has brought into the entertainment landscape in Nigeria.

The 2013 edition was considered a landmark as, for the first time attention was given to orphanages, in the Heart of Gold Edition. So Said Orphanage, Children Promises Ministry Orphanage and Vigilant Heart Orphanage are all beneficiaries of the millions in cash dished out during the show that year.

Cash rewards and prizes have also been given out to mothers who participated in the show since inception and were voted for by viewers from across the country as exceptional and worthy of emulation.

The anticipation that greets the emergence of every season of the show has been phenomenal as Nigerians always look forward to the true-life drama displayed in a no-holds-barred manner.

This year’s edition of the show, tagged “My Dad, My Supermom,” which is the fifth anniversary edition, is not an exception, riding on the dynamic nature of the show.

In this season, the show is celebrating fathers that have positioned themselves against all odds to give their children a fighting chance, by acting as mothers due to the death of the mother, the mother’s neglect of her children, divorce or separation.

Recruitment has been done through the children’s entries. Interviews have been conducted and the stories have been scripted into docudramas and re-enacted by professional actors.

Twenty unique stories of different fathers have been selected, including Victor Ikechukwu Dozie, Salaudeen Ajayi, Tony Peters, Pa Okunola Adewolu, Babatunde Fagbemi, Peter Edozie, Peter Eze, Abdulateef Adekanbi, Paul Ugbesia, Pa Ibrahim Seidu, Tajudeen Jimoh, Bababtunde Shomefun, Waheed Afolayan, Donatus Ikata, Pa. Samuel Adewuyi, Godspower Nwadidia, Michael Essien Udok, Abaniseloluwa Isijola, Isaac Foluso Okeya and James Okon Lewis.

Viewers can catch the show on different TV stations across the country m such as AIT, Galaxy, CRBC Calabar, RSTV Port Harcourt, Kwara TV Ilorin, NTA Aba and ITV Abuja, as well as Africa Magic on DSTV from September 1, 2014.
