There was jubilation in Onitsha last week as the Anambra State Government commissioned the new ultra-modern polythene and allied market built by polythene and plastic materials dealers on Madueke Street, Onitsha. The traders were given December 1 deadline to move into the market.
Commissioning the market located at Ikenga, Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, Governor Willie Obiano said he was elated at the effort of the traders in completing the market, which he said was aimed at decongesting Onitsha market.
Obiano, represented by the state Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Mr. Ifeatu Onejeme, noted that government would always encourage traders to complete new business sites by providing social amenities such as security, streetlights and other facilities to make such markets attractive to traders and their customers.
Obiano, however, expressed anger over the conversion of toilet facilities to shops in some markets across the state.
He warned members of Madueke Street Polythene and Allied Dealers Association who built the market to move into the new site on or before December 1, saying government would do everything to enforce the law banning street trading.
Obiano further reminded traders of the need to embrace electronic trading, which according, to him is safe and quick in business transactions.
In his remarks, President-General of Anambra Markets Traders Association (AMATAS), Chief Okwudili Ezenwankwo, expressed delight at the leadership of the market union in completing the site and advised all the traders of the polythene and allied dealers doing business at Madueke Street, to join hands in developing the new market.
In their separate speeches, the Chairman of Polythene and Allied Dealers’ Association, Chief Matthias Nwokoye, and a major stakeholder, Chief Chukwudi Nwokediuko, both pleaded with the state government to build the access road to the market, saying it was almost impassable to motorists.
