Ebube Nwagbo is both loved and not loved by many for different reasons. Beyond scandals however is a talented role interpreter. In a recent online interview by our Senior Reporter ANTHONIA SOYINGBE, Ebube x-rayed her life, business and passion. Excerpt:
What really has been happening to Ebube; it would seem you have been more involved in other businesses than acting?
That is not true but I have been extremely busy with work and business, but that is not to say that I am complaining, I thank God for every bit of it. Shuttling between Lagos and Asaba where most of the movies are shot is not easy aside the international trips I embark on based on my hair and accessories business. But it has been a fruitful 2014 so far. The year has been awesome for me in terms of career, business and family and life itself comes with different challenges, but being able to pull through makes it interesting and worthwhile.
Your latest movie titled Smile Again many say is based on your personal life experience. How true is this?
The truth is that the Script idea came after a movie I saw even though it had nothing to do with the storyline. I wanted to relate the script with the happenings in our society and of course as a strong believer of love and God’s miraculous ways of doing things, I was convinced I can invest in it aside using it to pass a message to everyone. It’s a family story, a movie everybody can sit and watch. It preaches God’s love for us and why we need to be hopeful regardless of our present situation. It’s been released into the market already and still doing well.
What is the major difference between Ebube on set and Ebute outside set?
A lot of people tend to attach me to what they see on set. When I started out, it was with the roles that endear people to me, so everybody thought I am that accommodating and nice, I am not saying I am not nice. I am nice, but I am not that naïve girl everybody thinks I am because most people tend to take advantage of it, thinking what they see on screen is the way I am. I still have some sides to me; I am not that perfect person they think I am. I am not that person everybody takes advantage of. It is totally different for me. I am not that loud but I could be when I want to.
You have been in the industry for over a decade, how has it been?
I started acting when I was very young, I grew up in Nollywood. It was in 2003, I was about 20 years old then. I was still in School, so it was shuffling School and work. I learnt the good and bad things here. It has been a journey for me. It is like growing. I started fending for myself and my family at that age. I grew up like that and Nollywood kind of moulded me into what I am today based on where I am coming from as a person. It became the family I know because those early years I was always on set. All I knew at that time was making movies. The journey so far has been smooth, it has been rough, it has been sweet, it has been bitter, but so far, I am thankful to God for where I am today.
What are some of the pains of stardom and how do you cope with these?
As much as we have to live our life for the public, we still have to be who we are. They should not forget that we are human beings at the end of the day. People expect us to be super human, they expect a lot and believe because you are in the limelight, you have to live your life in a certain way. Yes, that is true but we are all human beings and we make mistakes. Everything I have done in life, I wouldn’t call it regrets. I have learnt my lesson and it has taught me something positive. I believe whatever happens in my life has been destined to happen that way; I am just acting out a script written by God. I do the best I can and leave the rest to him. Because of what we do, a lot of people believe that they know us better than we know ourselves. They expect us to do certain things, forgetting that we are just like them out there. Yes, we have to be role models to people which I personally try my best to be. But people should not condemn me when I do not live up to expectation.
What can you ascribe as the secret behind the success of your Posh Hair brand?
It has been God and pure hard work. I think the brand became an instant household name in the market because we ensure we give our customers worth for their money without having them to break a bank. There is loads of hair brands out there in the market but Posh Hair, cuts across for every class of person. I think that’s one of my trade secrets, there is always something for everyone, and it makes you stand above the crowd in style. Posh Divo is the latest addition to myPosh Empire as I love to call it. It is 100% Brazilian Virgin Hair and comes in different short lengths in a pack. It is different varieties all packed in one pack for the value of one. That is it is different from other Posh Products.
You recently won a fashion and style award, what informs your style?
I love to put on whatever suits me and I advise everyone to please do the same. I know and understand my body type and structure and as such ensure that I dress according to them. I can never be caught in an outfit am not comfortable in. The first rule in fashion is making sure you are comfortable in what you are wearing. You should wear the outfit and not the other way round like most ladies. I am not particular about following trends or big names, as long as what am wearing suits me and my hour glass figure is not disfigured am good to go. I can’t do without my lip gloss, Sunglasses and of course my Smile!
Since you break your romantic relationship with Kcee, not much has been heard of you, can you share with us your current relationship status?
I have decided to channel my time and energy into becoming a better person aside expanding my business and career. I am not in any relationship now.
What actually led to the break between you and Kcee?
Please I don’t want to comment on that. I have been misquoted and people have said a lot. Let us forget about my past so we can face the future.
What is your take on marriage and how soon do you intend to walk down the aisle?
Marriage is sacred. And nobody goes into it with the intention of it breaking down the next minute. Everybody wants the ‘happily ever after’ kind of romance including me. So it has to be done rightly and at the right time with the right person. I realize why most marriages fail is because of societal pressures. People have age tag for we women especially expecting us to automatically become Mrs Somebody even if it entails suffering and pains. Life has advanced beyond that, for me the main thing is to be happy and proud with our decisions in life because the people who mislead you will be the first to laugh at you when the chips are down.
How do you intend to stay relevant in the industry considering new talented female actress in the industry?
Well the truth is the sky is wide for enough birds to fly. Having said that, I will remain being myself (Ebube Nwagbo). I will never attempt to be like the next person. The industry is big enough to contain all of us. It shows we are growing. I can never be intimidated by someone’s achievement.
