In an interview, Yusuf said, “the event drives home thefact that each time we insist on safety measures on our roads, the objective isnot to exhibit meanness to road users rather we are expressing the strength ofgrief we bear each time we have to rescue crash victims and worse of all whendeaths are involved in avoidable circumstances.
“By this event, we are strengthened, more resolved toinsist on compliance and this we will continue to do as God helps us,” hestated.
To celebrate the World Day of Remembrance for RoadTraffic Victims, UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon in a message called ongovernments and all concerned with safety on the road to be re-committed tomake roads that are safe for all while enjoining road users generally toembrace best safety practices while on the roads for the good of all.
It is a day set aside by the United Nations and AfricanUnion to identify and console with families and friends of victims of roadcrashes across the globe.
Ki-moon recalled that crashes are the leading cause ofdeath for people 15 to 29 years old, saying, “Road crashes also claim manyyounger victims, with more than 500 children killed each day as they travel toand from school, playgrounds and the homes of family and friends.
