Chaplains of Catholic youth organisations have been called upon to be more proactive in their activities and provide exemplary leadership for the youths of the Church in the country. The call was made by the Secretary of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) Youth Committee, Rev. Fr. Charles Ndubisi, during a meeting with the chaplains in Benin City, Edo State, recently.
According to catholic website, www.cnsng.org, Fr. Ndubisi, who is also the Youth Animator of the Catholic Church in the country and National coordinator of the 2015 National Youth Day celebration scheduled for Benin City, in August, called on the chaplains to see themselves as collaborators of the Bishops’ Conference in pasturing the youths of the Church.
While urging the chaplains not to see the National Youth Day celebration as an event of the Catholic Secretariat alone, the Youth Animator expressed concern about the nonchalant attitude of some chaplains in the planning and preparations for previous celebrations. He declared: “The target of this meeting is for all the chaplains and leaders of the youth groups to take ownership of the programme”, urging them to unite together to achieve remarkable success in the celebration.”
The CBCN Youth Committee Secretary went on to outline the roles of the chaplains in the forthcoming celebration in Benin. These include: facilitating early registration of the various youth groups in all the dioceses of the country; organizing orientation programmes for the diocesan delegates in order to guide and prepare them for the celebration and ensuring successful participation and fruitful outcome of the event.
Fr. Ndubisi also urged the chaplains to prepare their youths to “appreciate the National Youth Day celebration as a spiritual event and not a social gathering; facilitate the catechesis sessions, hear confessions, ensure that the delegates comply with the regulations of the celebration and actively participate in all the programmes.”
While urging them to show good example in terms of attendance, the Youth Animator urged all the chaplains “to join hands together to ensure a celebration of the fourth National Youth Day, which will impact positively in the lives of our young people”.
