The death has been announced of the Former Head of Mother Teresa’s Charity, Sister Nirmala. A Statement issued from Kolkata, New Delhi on June 23, 2015 by Sister Christie, Spokeswoman, Missionaries of Charity, the 80-year-old Sister Nirmala, who succeeded Mother Teresa as the head of the missionaries, died early Tuesday.
She said the nun passed away shortly after midnight in Kolkata (New Delhi), and the funeral would be held on Wednesday.
Charity officials said Nirmala had not been well for the past few days and her health was gradually deteriorating.
Nirmala Joshi, born in 1934, in the eastern state of Bihar, converted from Hinduism to Christianity and later joined the Missionaries of Charity.
She headed the order from Mother Teresa’s death in 1997 until 2009, when German-born Sister Mary Prema was elected head of the congregation.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, said Nirmala’s life was devoted to service, caring for the poor and underprivileged.
He prayed that her soul rest in peace.
Albania-born Mother Teresa lived and worked in Kolkata for more than 45 years, ministering to the sick, dying and orphans. She founded the Missionaries of Charity in 1950.
The Nobel Peace Prize winner was beatified by Pope John Paul II and given the title Blessed Teresa of Kolkata in 2003.
